Liminal commissioned us to curate various additions to their space at Plateia Theatrou, Athens, as part of a small renovation. These include various auxiliary furniture and custom structures such as: bathroom cabinets and shelves, changing room benches and storage areas, a special composite in the main hall, a sliding partition in the loft area, a mobile structure for transporting and storing seats, etc.

Trying to save resources, in our constructions we mostly used melamine-coated novopan, which we combined with various steel elements, but also pine plywood surfaces. Attempting to follow a simple and at the same time elegant design language, we invented various fabrication details that added special interest to an otherwise simple construction logic.

The locker room equipment was installed in the loft to accommodate the space where participants from Liminal’s various training workshops change clothes and temporarily store their personal belongings. On either side of the space, two benches were placed which function as seats and feature storage space underneath for shoes, bags, etc. On the wall above one of the benches, a shelf was hung for accompanying items and accessories, while on the side of the composition an additional storage cabinet was placed, for the auxiliary equipment of the workshops.

The basic structure of the equipment is made of novopan coated with off-white melamine which, in contrast with the dark color of the walls, gives the structures a light industrial style. The end surfaces of the counters as well as some of the cabinet doors are made of pine plywood, which gives a warmer texture to the constructions, while the plywood skirting is lined with dark blue PVC tape to visually intensify the outline of the objects .

Approximately the same design and construction logic was followed for the shelving unit of the central hall which houses the sound system equipment, as well as other auxiliary equipment for the needs of the group's events. This equipment expands the useful storage space, as it integrates into recess of the existing space and makes the most of its potential.

The shelving unit rests on a metal frame made of steel hollow square beams, 30mm x 30mm in cross-section, which blend with the dark background and provide the main volumes of the construction with a sense of floating. These volumes offer for storage both their interior and their upper surface, functioning as cupboards and at the same time as shelves.

Additionally, a wheeled equipment was created in order to serve the quick transport and smart storage of the seats in the space. It is a mobile structure, measuring 1m(L) x 0.6m(W) x 1m(H), made of steel square tubes and a plywood surface, which holds approximately 15 folding chairs. The construction allows the suspension of seats on one side while on the other, it offers handles for easy transport.

Finally, a sliding partition was created between the two loft areas. Its overall dimensions are 215cm (Y) x 185cm (W). Made from standard rectangular steel tubes 60mm x 30mm for the outer frame and 40mmx40mm for the intermediate partitions. The steel frame was powder coated black and invested with cellular polycarbonate that blurs visibility from one space to the other, while it allows the diffusion of natural light.
