Forensic Architecture (FA) is a research agency, based at Goldsmiths, University of London, investigating human rights violations including violence committed by states, police forces, militaries, and corporations. FA works in partnership with institutions across civil society, from grassroots activists, to legal teams, to international NGOs and media organisations, to carry out investigations with and on behalf of communities and individuals affected by conflict, police brutality, border regimes and environmental violence.
In modern times, conflicts are increasingly occurring in urbanised areas, making neighbourhoods a common target. These urban battlefields produce substantial amounts of data, as instances of war crimes and human rights violations within cities are often captured by cameras. Analysing such incidents in urban environments requires the modelling of dynamic geographies that unfold over space and time, creating navigable 3D models of conflict zones, along with interactive representations and mappings on an urban or architectural scale. These architectural scientific techniques aim to present precise, convivial and accessible information, which is crucial for the pursuit of justice.
FA employs cutting-edge techniques in spatial and architectural analysis, open source investigation, digital modelling, and immersive technologies, as well as documentary research, situated interviews, and academic collaboration. Findings from their investigations take the form of models, diagrams, maps, interactive web-based materials, films, and animations. Their work has been presented in national and international courtrooms, parliamentary inquiries, and exhibitions at some of the world’s leading cultural institutions and in international media, as well as in citizen’s tribunals and community assemblies.
