The Jam Road project is an ephemeral urban intervention on the pedestrian street of Rineas in Kypseli. It was realized within the framework of the pilot program "City^2" which concerned the revitalization of the city center through light, small-scale interventions with the aim of sustainable urban development and citizen participation.
Our project was divided into two parallel directions: the musical urban playscape -which was undertaken by the Fat Cut collective- and the urban furniture -which was undertaken by our team in collaboration with Rokani. The common goal of both working groups was the development of lightweight structures made of recycled or recyclable materials, friendly to both the environment and the users. Fat Cut developed an interactive percussion wall, an acoustic seesaw and an urban xylophone while our team developed three urban seating areas with built-in flower beds.
The intervention unfolded along the pedestrian street, in close proximity to the local school and in intense dialogue with the previous architecture of the area. The seating areas were installed in empty spots located within the existing planting zone, in the ribs created by its zigzag form and with the musical playscape as a background.
The structure of each seating area occupies a large space (on average 2m x 3m) and in this way it allows the passer-by to both sit and lie on the structure, but also invites the residents to experience the space collectively, sitting in groups . The seating surfaces are folded at periodic intervals to form the "back rest" of the bench while at the same time they are interrupted at various points to form the flower beds. The two-tone color of the surface creates a playful feeling, while the various aromatic and decorative plants that were planted offer pleasant smells and images to the seating area.
