The Ευ Ζην social cooperative commissioned us to design and construct in collaboration with Rokani the new canteen bar at the Attica Psychiatric Hospital. In addition, we undertook the architectural study for the arrangement and coloring of the hall, the rearrangement of the existing auxiliary spaces, as well as to supervise the construction works for the renovation of the hall.
For the bar we chose a linear arrangement facing the stage, compatible with the general architecture of the hall. The facade of the bar was divided into two sections, one with food display cases and the other with a serving and working bench. The design of the bar was based on a modular structural system where the elementary unit adapts to receive the necessary equipment and multiplies to form the total length of the structure.
The basic structural module is 80 cm long and is repeated 21 times in two types: a short one, for the display cases and a tall one, with folds for the serving and working bench. Each module consists of a birch plywood surface between two vertical pine elements. Composite T-pieces fit the vertical elements of the bench units and hold the birch plywood surfaces that form the folds.
At the back of the bar we placed wooden shelves in a metal frame for products and auxiliary equipment. The design of the shelves followed a variation of the bench structure. The vertical elements consist of single metal square beams fixed to the floor and wall that support U-shaped shelves made of solid pine panels.
